How Long Does Sea Shipping from China Take? My Real Door-to-Door Timeline
"How long will it take to arrive?" It's the first question I had when I started buying on Alibaba, and it's probably yours too.
Let me be honest first: I don't live in the UK, and I've never imported into the UK. I live in Portugal, in the EU, and I import from China as a private individual, with no company. So this post shows my real timeline, stage by stage, from my own orders. Then, in a clearly labelled section, I'll cover what affects sea shipping times to the UK, using official and reputable sources only.
The short answer from my orders
- Production: about 3–4 days after I pay
- Sea shipping, DDP: about a month and a half from the day my agent ships the goods to the day they reach my door
- Delays so far: none
The month and a half is the big one. Everything before it is short in comparison.
My door-to-door timeline, stage by stage
1. I pay the supplier
I pay through Alibaba, by card, with Trade Assurance on the order. That's the moment the clock starts for me. I explain the whole process in How I Import from China as a Private Individual.
2. Production: about 3–4 days
After I pay, production takes about 3–4 days. That's for my products, carpentry hardware like hinges and handles. Yours may take longer, so ask the supplier before you pay.
3. The supplier ships to my agent in China
The supplier doesn't send my order abroad. It sends it to my own shipping agent's warehouse in China. More on why I work this way in How I Ship My Alibaba Orders with My Own Shipping Agent.
4. The agent opens the box and sends me photos
When the goods arrive, the agent opens the order, photographs the goods and waits for my OK. Nothing leaves China until I've seen it. How long this step takes partly depends on me: the sooner I reply, the sooner the goods move.
5. Sea shipping, DDP, with a tracking code
Once I say OK, the agent ships the goods by sea on DDP terms, with a tracking code all the way to my home. From the day the agent dispatches the order, it takes about a month and a half to reach my door.
Because it's DDP, the taxes and duties are already paid as part of the shipping. I've never had my goods stuck at customs or a bill waiting for me at the door. I explain DDP in What Is DDP Shipping?
Sea vs air: what I've actually seen
I've shipped both ways, so here's the honest comparison:
| Sea (hinges and handles) | Air (phone chargers) | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | about a month and a half from the agent's dispatch | faster than sea |
| Cost per kg | about 2.73 € | about 7–8 € |
| Who shipped it | my own agent, DDP | the supplier, taxes included |
My last sea order weighed 32 kg and cost 126.13 € in total to get to my door, including a remote-area fee and my agent's fixed commission.
Air was faster, and much more expensive per kilo. But the phone chargers were light, so the total shipping cost ended up similar. For heavier goods like my hardware, sea is the obvious choice. My rule: look at the total, not just the price per kilo. Weight changes everything.
Why the wait doesn't stress me
A month and a half is not fast. But I know it in advance, so I plan for it. I have a tracking code, my agent has already checked the goods, and DDP means nobody will ask me for money at the end. So far, I've never had a delay.
I can't promise that for every order or every route. What I can say is that knowing the timeline before you pay makes it much easier to live with.
UK: general information, not my own experience
I've never imported into the UK, so nothing in this section comes from my orders. It summarises official GOV.UK guidance and other reputable sources as of October 2026, for goods going to Great Britain. Check the linked pages before you order. For the UK tax basics (20% VAT, the £135 rule, duty), see Importing from China to the UK.
What affects sea shipping times to the UK
- The route ships take. Since the security problems in the Red Sea began in late 2023, many container ships between Asia and Europe have sailed around Africa's Cape of Good Hope instead of using the Suez Canal. In 2024, UNCTAD estimated that this adds about 12 days to a voyage from Shanghai to Rotterdam (UNCTAD). Ask your agent which route your shipment will take.
- The UK port. The UK's biggest container ports by tonnage in 2025 were London (which includes London Gateway) and Felixstowe, according to the Department for Transport's port freight statistics. Your goods still need to travel from the port to your door after they land.
- Customs clearance. Goods have to clear UK customs before they're released. That's the part DDP is meant to take off your hands, but it still has to happen.
How UK customs clearance works
GOV.UK's step-by-step guide to customs clearance sets out the main steps:
- An import declaration is made, either by you or by a transporter or customs agent you hire. GOV.UK says most businesses that import goods use one (Import goods into the UK).
- VAT and duty are paid. HMRC says how much is due after the declaration is submitted.
- The goods are released, unless they're held up.
GOV.UK lists reasons goods may be held at the border, for example:
- the right amount of duty or VAT hasn't been paid
- the right import licences are missing
- the goods didn't pass inspection
- they've been combined with a shipment that has been held up
If an agent deals with customs for you, GOV.UK says they need your written instructions, and you're still responsible for due diligence on your declarations (GOV.UK: get someone to deal with customs for you). If a courier delivers a parcel with tax to pay, it normally holds it for about 3 weeks before returning it to the sender (GOV.UK: tax and duty on goods sent from abroad). More on those bills in Why DHL or UPS Sends You a Customs Bill.
What I'd ask before your first sea shipment
- How long is production? Ask the supplier before you pay.
- How long from dispatch to my door? Ask your agent for their usual time to your postcode.
- Which route and port? It helps you understand the estimate.
- Is it DDP? Get it confirmed in writing that VAT, duty and delivery are included.
- Will I get a tracking code and photos before dispatch?
My own answer to "how long does it take?" is simple: a few days of production, then about a month and a half by sea from my agent to my door. Plan for the wait before you pay, and it won't surprise you.
